Overview
Capanna Margherita, perched atop Punta Gnifetti (known as Signal Kuppe in Switzerland) at an altitude of 4,554 m, is the highest mountain hut in Europe. The hut is a highly sought-after destination for mountaineers from all over the world. While the ascent does not present major technical difficulties, it is nevertheless a rewarding challenge due to the high altitude reached.
It takes place in one of the most breathtaking environments in the Alps, which, weather permitting, can be admired in all their glory from Monviso all the way to the Bernina Range and beyond. The excursion is typically undertaken over two days, with a stopover at the Mantova or Gnifetti huts, but here we offer it as a one-day challenge: perfect for those with excellent cardiovascular fitness.
Required level:
Reserved for well-conditioned mountaineers with glacier experience.
Requires the ability to climb in a rope team, independent use of crampons and ice axe, and good acclimatisation to high altitude.
Excellent physical condition is essential.
Season: From June to September
Programme
We meet at the Staffal lift ticket office about 15 minutes before opening, around 7:00 am, to check our gear. Afterwards, we take the cable car up to Punta Indren (3,270 m).
From the top station of the cable car, we continue along the classic route, reaching the Capanna Margherita hut in about 4 hours of ascent. After a brief, welcoming stop at the mountain hut to recharge and enjoy the view, we begin our descent back towards the Punta Indren lifts, which will take us back to Staffal.
