Overview

As the highest peak of Monte Rosa, Dufourspitze (Punta Dufour) is a summit of generous beauty and classic aesthetics. It requires experience in mixed climbing and basic rock-climbing skills (III+). While not presenting overly high technical difficulties, the route is still challenging as it unfolds at altitudes above 4,500 m, demanding strict timings on passages that must be tackled both on the way up and on the descent back down. The setting is truly magnificent, overlooking the east face and Macugnaga; the extraordinary jagged ridge leading to the summit is a must-do for anyone wishing to prepare for climbing the Matterhorn or Mont Blanc.

Please note: the ascent of Dufourspitze is intended for experienced mountaineers. Before accepting the booking, our guides will ask for your climbing resume and, if necessary, suggest a test climb to assess your skills and preparation. Since this type of climb requires stable weather and excellent conditions, we can only set a tentative date, which will then need to be confirmed in the preceding days. For this specific ascent, we cannot offer a rate inclusive of cable cars and mountain huts, which must be booked closer to the date once conditions have been assessed.

Period: From June to September

Programme

We will meet at 14:30 at the lift ticket office in Staffal, where we will check our gear together before taking the lifts up to Punta Indren (3270 m). From there, we will continue on foot to the Città di Mantova refuge (3498 m), reaching it in about an hour. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

The following day, we set off at dawn to tackle the normal route to Punta Dufour, passing by Punta Zumstein. After about 6 and a half hours of ascent, we reach the highest peak of Monte Rosa. After a brief stop at the summit, we return to the Città di Mantova refuge and then descend to Punta Indren. We expect to arrive back in Staffal at around 16:30.

What to know before you set off

Mountaineering is by its very nature an adventurous activity. The Monte Rosa guides, all of whom are UIAGM certified, are dedicated to doing everything possible to minimise any hazards, but a element of risk is always present and should be embraced as part of the adventure before signing up for our activities.

The Monte Rosa Guides will always do their utmost to help you achieve your personal goals and ensure you have the best possible experience in nature. However, you must agree to trust their professional judgement whilst in the mountains and respect any decision they make, including turning back, should it be deemed necessary. Being well-prepared and maintaining a good level of physical fitness is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey on all our excursions. If, due to fitness levels or any other reason, your guide feels you are not quite ready for your chosen activity, they will happily suggest alternative adventures beautifully suited to your current level of preparation.
