Overview
The Cresta del Soldato is an excellent route for those wishing to familiarise themselves with the mixed terrain typical of high-altitude mountains. The path is fairly straightforward but not trivial, never particularly exposed and always accessible using moving-together techniques, without underestimating the altitude, potential rock instability, and its unpredictability. This ridge serves as an exciting first approach, an experience suited to those who have already tackled ridges and want to take the next step. For those with higher fitness levels, it is possible to continue along the ridge to reach the Vincent Pyramid (4,125 m).
Period: From June to September
Programme
We will meet at 7:30 am at the ticket office of the Staffal ski lifts and ascend together to Punta Indren (3270 m). From there, we head eastwards, crossing the remnants of the Indren glacier and the rocky scree up to the old station on the ridge bordering the Lys Valley and Valsesia.
With a long diagonal traverse, we cross the Bors glacier to reach the base of the Cresta del Soldato (Soldier's Ridge), just above the first distinct ledge. Here, the real climb begins along the ridge, which will lead us up to the summit of Punta Giordani (4046 m).
Those who still have plenty of energy can continue towards the Vincent Pyramid, crossing the snowy saddle that connects the two peaks. We will tackle the first rocky steps of the east-south-east ridge and ascend with a few exciting moves on the rock (grade III) to the snowy cap of the summit.
