Overview

The Corno Nero (4321 m) is a steep, rocky peak of the Monte Rosa massif, nestled between Colle Vincent and Colle Zurbriggen. It is the highest peak in the Monte Rosa group located entirely within Italian territory, offering spectacular views of the eastern face towards Punta Parrot. This is an exciting and challenging climb that involves a variety of mountaineering techniques.

Season: from June to September

Programme

We will meet in front of the lift ticket office around 07:30, check our gear, and take the cable cars to reach Punta Indren. We cross the glacier and the stony ground to the Mantova Refuge, then continue on the glacier to the Gnifetti Refuge. Roped together, we head towards Colle del Lys and then Colle Vincent, from where we detour towards the Corno Nero. Passing near the Balmenhorn, we reach Colle Zurbriggen below the summit, and then climb up the slope of the Corno Nero (about 50°) to the small ridge near the summit's Madonna statue.

For the descent, we will make abseils from the ridge and then head down along the same route. Ascent duration: approximately 3 hours 30 minutes

What to know before you set off

Mountaineering is by its very nature an adventurous activity. The Monte Rosa guides, all of whom are UIAGM certified, are dedicated to doing everything possible to minimise any hazards, but a element of risk is always present and should be embraced as part of the adventure before signing up for our activities.

The Monte Rosa Guides will always do their utmost to help you achieve your personal goals and ensure you have the best possible experience in nature. However, you must agree to trust their professional judgement whilst in the mountains and respect any decision they make, including turning back, should it be deemed necessary. Being well-prepared and maintaining a good level of physical fitness is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey on all our excursions. If, due to fitness levels or any other reason, your guide feels you are not quite ready for your chosen activity, they will happily suggest alternative adventures beautifully suited to your current level of preparation.
