Mount Rosa

Overview

One of the most beautiful and inspiring of the "minor" peaks of Monte Rosa, the Punta Parrot owes its name to the German doctor Johann Jakob Friedrich Wilhelm Parrot, who attempted to climb the Vincent Pyramid with Joseph Zumstein in 1816. However, it was first summited on 16 August 1863 by Reginald S. MacDonald, Florence Crauford Grove, Montagu Woodmass, alongside guides Melchior Anderegg and Peter Perren. The long, sharp ridge leads to the summit with a technical yet highly rewarding approach, offering a spectacular panoramic view.

Period: From June to September

Programme

DAY ONE:

We meet at the Staffal ski lift ticket office at 14:30. After a quick equipment check, we take the ski lifts up to Punta Indren (3270 m) and from there we hike up to the Città di Mantova mountain hut (3498 m), reaching it in about an hour. Dinner and overnight stay at the hut.

DAY TWO:

At dawn, we begin our ascent towards Punta Parrot. After crossing the glacier, we tackle a spectacular snowy ridge that leads us to the summit at 4436 m. After a brief pause to take in the views, we return to the Mantova hut and then head down to Punta Indren. We expect to arrive back in Staffal in the afternoon, between approximately 16:00 and 16:30.

Ascent duration from the Mantova hut: 4–5 hours
Elevation gain from the Mantova hut: approx. 950 m

What to know before you set off

Mountaineering is by its very nature an adventurous activity. The Monte Rosa guides, all of whom are UIAGM certified, are dedicated to doing everything possible to minimise any hazards, but a element of risk is always present and should be embraced as part of the adventure before signing up for our activities.

The Monte Rosa Guides will always do their utmost to help you achieve your personal goals and ensure you have the best possible experience in nature. However, you must agree to trust their professional judgement whilst in the mountains and respect any decision they make, including turning back, should it be deemed necessary. Being well-prepared and maintaining a good level of physical fitness is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey on all our excursions. If, due to fitness levels or any other reason, your guide feels you are not quite ready for your chosen activity, they will happily suggest alternative adventures beautifully suited to your current level of preparation.
