Overview
Want to add a touch of adrenaline to the classic ski touring ascent to Capanna Margherita?
This ski touring adventure will take you to the summit of Punta Gnifetti with a detour towards the slightly more airy Punta Zumstein. From here, you can admire the majestic east face of Monte Rosa, the Marinelli Couloir, and Punta Dufour from a breathtaking new perspective.
Programme
FIRST DAY:
We meet at the departures of the lifts for an equipment check. Once we reach Punta Indren by cable car, we begin our ascent to the Mantova Refuge. The route is short and gentle: perfect for getting comfortable with skins and refining your ascent and descent techniques with ski touring equipment.
Ascent elevation gain: 350 m
Ascent time: about 1 and a half hours
SECOND DAY:
At dawn, we put on our skins and set off towards the Colle del Lys. From here, we venture into the Grenz glacier basin, dominated by the Capanna Margherita and Punta Gnifetti. The climb doesn’t have any particularly exposed sections, but we will cross crevassed areas, which we will tackle safely with the right techniques.
The goal of the day is to reach two major 4,000-metre peaks: Punta Zumstein (4,563 m), passing through the Colle del Papa, and Punta Gnifetti, which offers spectacular views over the south face of Monte Rosa.
Please note: above 3,500 m, altitude sickness can sometimes be felt, especially during the night at the refuge.
Ascent elevation gain: 1,300 m
Ascent time: 5–6 hours
