Mount Rosa

Overview

Different perspectives to discover Monte Rosa on its Swiss and Italian sides with one single goal: the magic of its peaks. Given the significant physical demands of this programme, this adventure is reserved for hiking enthusiasts with excellent high-altitude fitness.

Period: From June to September

Programme

Day 1:
We meet at the departure point of the Staffal lifts at 14:30 for a gear check. Taking the lifts, we reach Punta Indren (3270 m), where we begin our walk which brings us in about an hour to the Capanna Gnifetti/Mantova Refuge (Rifugio Città di Mantova - 3498 m). Here we have dinner and spend the night.

Day 2:
At sunrise, we begin our traverse: first we ascend to Vincent Pyramid (4215 m), then to the Christ of the Peaks (Balmenhorn - 4167 m) and subsequently to the Ludwigshöhe (4342 m), until we reach Capanna Margherita, the highest refuge in Europe, at 4554 m. Dinner and overnight stay at the summit.

Day 3:
After breakfast, we climb to Punta Zumstein (4561 m), the third highest peak of Monte Rosa. From here, we begin a long descent along the Grenz Glacier to Rotenboden (2815 m). We take the Gornergrat cog railway down to Zermatt, then ascend again with the lifts to the Klein Matterhorn (3883 m) and descend to the Teodulo Refuge (3017 m), where we enjoy dinner and overnight accommodation with views of the Matterhorn.

Day 4:
Starting from the Teodulo Refuge, we begin our day by climbing to the Breithorn Pass. We pass under the south faces of the Breithorn and Pollux, before tackling the west face of Castor to reach its summit (4226 m). After a well-deserved rest, we descend to the Quintino Sella Refuge (3585 m) to relax. From here, we continue towards the Bettaforca Pass and return to Gressoney.

The itinerary can be extended with ascents of the Breithorn and Pollux (available at an additional cost).

What to know before you set off

Mountaineering is by its very nature an adventurous activity. The Monte Rosa guides, all of whom are UIAGM certified, are dedicated to doing everything possible to minimise any hazards, but a element of risk is always present and should be embraced as part of the adventure before signing up for our activities.

The Monte Rosa Guides will always do their utmost to help you achieve your personal goals and ensure you have the best possible experience in nature. However, you must agree to trust their professional judgement whilst in the mountains and respect any decision they make, including turning back, should it be deemed necessary. Being well-prepared and maintaining a good level of physical fitness is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey on all our excursions. If, due to fitness levels or any other reason, your guide feels you are not quite ready for your chosen activity, they will happily suggest alternative adventures beautifully suited to your current level of preparation.
